Christien Meindertsma, author of Pig 05049 begins her TED Talk with the question:
How many people here actually eat pig meat?
Historically, when a pig was butchered, every piece of that pig would be used for something. Nothing would be wasted.
Meindertsma was curious if this still was the case. She spent 3 years in research by following a pig numbered 05049 and found that this pig, while used for meat, was also used for things like ammunition, medicine, photo paper, heart valves, brakes, chewing gum, porcelain, cosmetics, cigarettes, conditioner and even bio diesel.
