Then, instead of becoming a traditional overlay, the CPUC eliminated the boundary between 619 and 858 altogether in 2017, allowing a large amount of San Diego territory to now operate under a merged 619/858 overlay pairing.

These days, since it shares its service area with most of the 619 area, 858 has become just as common as 619.

The areas most associated with the 858 area code include:

• San Diego (northern sections and neighborhoods)

• Poway

• Del Mar

• Solana Beach

• La Jolla

• Rancho Bernardo

• Rancho Santa Fe

• Scripps Ranch

• Carmel Valley

• Mira Mesa

• University City

858 covers famous places like the Del Mar Racetrack and the La Jolla Cove. As of right now, both area codes cover the same enormous amount of territory, reaching all the way into Imperial, Inyo and Mono Counties (think Mammoth Lakes, CA).

Thus, the 760 and 442 area codes are most prolific in these areas:

• Oceanside

• Escondido

• Carlsbad

• Vista

• Victorville

• Palm Springs

• Hesperia

• San Marcos

• Indio

• El Centro

• Encinitas

By the way, the 619, 858 area codes can exist within some of these outer regions, but you’re more likely to find 760 and 442 throughout the northern and western edges of San Diego County, and beyond.

For this reason, anyone setting up a local business in, say, the Escondido area may actually benefit from a 760 area code number!
