A call within a\u00a0rate center\u00a0is typically considered a local call, while a call from one\u00a0rate center\u00a0to another is a long-distance call.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in the city of San Diego, many individuals living further South will have a 619 area code. Those that live in North San Diego typically have an 858 area code. During ye ole landline days, if you were calling an 858 area code from a 619 area code, you may incur long distance charges.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1460\" style=\"width: 573px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.numberbarn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-22-at-8.46.56-AM.png\" alt=\"California 619 and 858 area code rate center\" width=\"573\" height=\"435\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <em>cpuc.cp.gov<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A rate center can be found by finding the NPA &#8211; NXX of a phone number.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this even mean, you ask?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NPA<\/strong>: Number Plan Area (aka Area Code)<\/li>\n<li><strong>NXX<\/strong>: Number Prefix (first 3 digits of your telephone number)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> can be any number from 2 to 9<\/li>\n<li><strong>P, A<\/strong>, can be any number from 0 to 9<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> can be any number from 0 to 9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For example: (858) 922-1234:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>858 is an area code assigned in California.<\/li>\n<li>858-922 is an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telephone_exchange\">exchange<\/a> assigned to Verizon Wireless associated with the La Jolla rate center.<\/li>\n<li>1234 is the line number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curious about your phone number? Not all carriers support every single rate center. We work with a variety of carriers to ensure that we can support the majority of rate centers.
