So to answer the question, yes<\/em>, you can quickly and easily port your number out from NumberBarn. Sure, we\u2019ve made the process extremely easy, but there are a few things you\u2019ll need to know when porting away\u2026<\/p>\n

Landline, cell and VoIP services are different<\/h2>\n

Cellular and VoIP service can be used with any number. However, landline service must be associated with an area code for the region it is in. So while you can use a California 951 area code for a cellphone or VOIP carrier in New York , you would need a local New York area code, such as 646, for a landline.<\/p>\n

Watch out for \u201crate centers\u201d<\/h2>\n

Not every phone number in your area code will work at every address in your area code. Read that again. It\u2019s true. Let\u2019s say you move half a mile down the road and ask your landline carrier to reconnect at the new house. Sorry. That number you\u2019ve had for years can\u2019t be used at the new address. Rate center<\/a>. Say what? It.was.half.a.mile.<\/p>\n

A \u201crate center<\/a>\u201d is a specific geographical area. If you move outside of your rate center, your current landline number would not be supported at your new address. It has to do with the legacy telecom switch network. Techy phone type stuff. VoIP and wireless carriers are not bound by these restrictions. They use the internet and cell towers independent of the telecom switch network.<\/p>\n

Toll free numbers can\u2019t go mobile<\/h2>\n

Although you\u2019d like to have that toll free number attached to the cell phone you use for business, it\u2019s just not possible. You can\u2019t port a toll free phone number to a wireless provider. They can\u2019t take it. Period. Now, if you want to forward calls to your cell phone<\/a>, that\u2019s something NumberBarn can do for you. And a different topic.<\/p>\n

Not all carriers are the same<\/h2>\n

There are hundreds of potential phone service providers. That means hundreds of policies, hundreds of procedures, and hundreds of different support restrictions. NumberBarn will allow port of your number to any carrier you choose. However, we can not control (or remember) the policies, procedures and support restrictions for hundreds of service providers. Not all carriers will accept or even support every phone number.<\/p>\n

When in doubt, ask the winning carrier first<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s our best advice. Ask your preferred carrier first. Let them know what you want to do. See if they have any restrictions for porting a number in. Tell them what number you have or are interested in buying. Knowing their limitations up front saves a lot of headaches later. And any good company should be willing to help a potential new customer get started.<\/p>\n

What is the fee to port out?<\/h2>\n

NumberBarn does not charge any fees to port your number away. In fact, we make it easy to do so.
