Area Codes That Spell Things (and Stuff): An A-Z Guide

Did you know that you can actually spell full words, like “F-U-N” with some area codes? Besides creating endless words and phrases with the letter combinations on your phone keypad, area codes that “spell things” can open the door to limitless possibilities to personalize or customize a phone number.

With the exhaustion of original area codes and the creation of area code overlays all across the U.S., new opportunities to craft clever custom phone number combinations exist, with multiple “new” area codes (mostly overlays) introduced per year.

Just for F-U-N-sies, we’re dropping an evolving, incomplete-but-exhaustive list of as many noteworthy area code words, phrases and patterns as we could find, for your area code and phone number customization inspo. (We were inspired by our own customer, an Arizona injury attorney and her creative use of area code “TIL,” spelling her law firm number “TIL-SHE-WINS.”)

Before we get into the ABCs (or the BACs – that’s 212, Manhattan) of our A-Z list, we’ll start with a few well-known area codes and their common spelling associations. Some have geographic associations, others connote with iconic or popular attractions or phrases. And, most are self-explanatory.

(Note that we’re including major cities and counties associated with these area codes, but most area codes cover multiple cities, neighborhoods, regions and occasionally entire states.)

Fun fact: “1,” and “0” are the only digits without letters assigned to them on the keypad. Historically, “0” was used to reach the operator (who physically connected calls with the caller and recipient back in the early days of telephones) and “1” signified a long-distance call.

Whether reinforcing your brand marketing, or personalizing a secondary, “public-facing” phone number, you can revel in your creativity and customize the perfect phone number today, at NumberBarn! You can see if your current number spells something here. (Your phone number could even be worth something!)
